Our History
The historic Monarch building was originally the “finest gentleman’s club this side of the Mississippi.”
Many stories have unfurled within its Victorian walls since the early 1900s, including lore of violence and hauntings. We wanted to preserve this storied building’s curious and strange history while also providing the ultimate comfort for guests.

2020
Renovations
The 2020 renovation tackled the second wing, and resulted in three more rooms: the Bela Lugosi’s Dracula Room, the Lizzie Borden Room, the Jack the Ripper Room, a second bathroom with a vintage black refinished claw foot tub, and the Victorian Atrium room, a common area which features an original skylight.

The Hauntings
At the height of the Gold Rush, Victor was a booming town and this casino, brothel and saloon was the place to be. After a barkeep was killed in a gunfight, the people who worked there began to see unexplained things.
That was before the fire.

After a ghastly fire leveled the building in 1899, the property was rebuilt. Despite the building’s phoenix-like rebirth, it never left its ghosts behind.
The town reported multiple hauntings.

With its Wild West past, it’s no wonder that the Black Monarch is rumored to be a paranormal hotel. Book your room today–it’s your once-in-a-lifetime
